Peru at the International Tasting Panel in Istanbul
In May, I had the honour of serving as an international jury member at the Istanbul International Olive Oil Competition — an experience that strengthens EVOO culture and puts Peru on the global olive oil map.
During the month of May, I had the honour of participating as an international jury member at the prestigious Istanbul International Olive Oil Competition, held in Istanbul. This major event brought together tasters, experts and professionals from the olive oil sector across many countries, with the aim of evaluating the sensory quality of extra virgin olive oils from around the world.
Being part of this international panel was a valuable opportunity to contribute my expertise in sensory analysis while exchanging knowledge with specialists from diverse olive oil cultures and traditions.
The essential role of international olive oil competitions
International competitions play a fundamental role in promoting quality and excellence within the olive oil industry. Through rigorous sensory evaluations conducted by trained experts, they recognise the efforts of producers and companies committed to achieving the highest standards.
The participation of jurors from different nationalities ensures objectivity and a diversity of technical criteria, allowing oils to be evaluated against internationally recognised standards.
My participation as an international jury member
During the tasting sessions, I participated in the sensory evaluation of numerous extra virgin olive oil samples, applying the internationally recognised methodology for identifying positive attributes and potential defects.
Each sample was analysed according to criteria such as fruitiness, bitterness, pungency, balance, aromatic complexity, sensory persistence and overall harmony.
This work demands concentration, objectivity and continuous training, as each oil expresses specific characteristics derived from its variety, origin, agronomic management and production process.
A space for international exchange
One of the most enriching aspects of this experience was sharing working sessions with tasters and experts from different producer and consumer countries.
Technical discussions, the sharing of experiences and the diversity of perspectives broadened our understanding of current trends, innovation, quality control and the development of the global olive oil sector.
Representing Peru and promoting EVOO culture
As a Peruvian international taster, it was particularly meaningful to represent Peru on a stage of this magnitude. The presence of Peruvian professionals at international events helps to highlight our country’s potential within the olive oil industry and strengthens ties with other global players.
Such experiences also allow us to bring back new knowledge and best practices to share with producers, companies, students and consumers interested in the world of olive oil.
A commitment to sharing knowledge
At Mundo AOVE, we continue working to promote the culture of extra virgin olive oil, fostering sensory education, technical training and the appreciation of quality products.
Participating in international events reaffirms our commitment to excellence, continuous learning and the sharing of reliable information throughout the entire olive oil value chain.
